Christopher Masoure

Christopher Masoure is a Canadian contemporary painter known for atmospheric abstract landscapes that hover between memory and place.

Born into an artistic family in Toronto, Masoure began painting at an early age, following in his father’s footsteps. He later studied Fine Arts in the United States and, after years of painting alongside a career in business, committed himself fully to his studio practice in 2008.

Inspired by the shifting moods of land, water and sky, Masoure works in acrylic on canvas, building his surfaces through multiple translucent layers applied with brushes and palette knives. Horizons emerge and recede, while forms dissolve into mist, light and reflection. The resulting paintings are deliberately ambiguous: what one viewer sees as an ocean may appear to another as a distant mountain range or an endless sky.

Influenced by the atmospheric landscapes of J.M.W. Turner and the expressive freedom of the New York Expressionists, Masoure has developed a restrained visual language of his own. Meditation is an integral part of his studio practice, informing paintings that favour stillness, balance and contemplation over literal representation.

Masoure’s paintings are less about depicting a particular landscape than creating a place to enter—a quiet space where the familiar becomes uncertain and the viewer is invited to complete the journey.
