Arta Gallery is proud to officially announce the arrival of one of our biggest exhibitions of 2016! Our walls will play host to brand new work from the Canadian Art Collective.
The Canadian Art Collective is comprised of five artists that have dedicated their practice to capturing the raw sublimity and diversity of the great Canadian landscape. Whether, urban, rural or simply uncultivated, every region depicted is seen as a unique observation of the continuing and evolving relationship that we have with our environment.
The paintings are sensual with texture and colour, ranging from the bold, expressionistic brushstrokes of Stewart Jones to the silken strokes and subtle colours of Peter Rotter, while Laurie De Camillis applies only what is neccessary with a bold, direct approach. Driven by a desire to capture the absence of human presence, Julie Desmarais couples thin oils with a delicate application in order to create the illusion of light resonating from within the canvas. By contrast, Michael Zarowsky pushes towards abstraction by using a self-invented technique that combines acrylics with watercolours, ultimately resulting in rich, dynamic compositions on prepared birch panels.
This wonderful show marks the official start of Arta's Fall Exhibition series. Join us for an Opening Reception on September 29th from 6-9pm as the artists will be present. We will also be hosting a special performance from Toronto-based celloist, Cheryl Ockrant.

Arta Gallery is proud to be hosting a solo exhibition by Canadian Street Photographer, Paul Jolicoeur.
Originally from Montreal and currently residing in the Eastern Townships region of Quebec, Paul Jolicoeur has been at the forefront of fine art photography and digital graphics for over 20 years. The pieces featured in Streets of Colour can be seen as his contribution and way of honoring the beauty of Senegal after living there for 5 years.
It was on his first trip to the country’s Northwest region, near the Atlantic Ocean that he discovered the enormous potential offered by the vibrant culture of St. Louis – a city that sits near the mouth of the Senegal River, approximately 320 km outside of the capital of Dakar. Having served as the capital of the French Colony of Senegal (1673 – 1902), the modern-day St. Louis is known for its vast urban culture and fishing quarter, Guet Ndar. This aspect of everyday life became Jolicoeur’s primary source of inspiration.
By travelling between different neighborhoods and allowing for uncontrollable shooting conditions to dictate his practice, Jolicoeur was able to capture spontaneous moments in which the rich, urban landscape of St. Louis became coupled with the unique character of its inhabitants.
Having spent 5 years studying and capturing the identity of St. Louis, the artist felt that in order to conclude this chapter in his creative pursuits, he had to return what his lens had ultimately taken from the local community. As a result, the first exhibition of the series featured in Streets of Colour was held in the heart of Guet Ndar.
To find out more about Paul Jolicoeur’s first exhibition in Senegal and to get a small preview of the work that we will be featuring, please check out: http://youtu.be/eCFcjXG_wQA.

Arta Gallery is proud to host a solo exhibition by Iranian-Canadian artist, Khosrow Abtahi in our main Gallery space this summer! Approaching each canvas from an Expressionist sensibility, Abtahi's brush is guided by the power of thought, personal reflection and endless creativity.
"The concept of time fascinates me. Whether it's loved or hated, stretched or shortened, it can ultimately be the past, present or the future. It could be ignored, postponed, feared or embraced. Whatever the case, its impact on our lives through this journey is irreversible. Travelling is time, and thinking is the best and most liberating way for one to travel. The images on my canvases are deliberate thoughts, each with its own story, goal and ultimate destination; unhindered by time and limited only by the extent of my imagination"
- Khosrow Abtahi

This is a photography exhibition about place, its identity, and how we see it change. Our world is something no two people will explain the same way. Some wander and advocate for getting lost, others never lose focus on their elegant path. This exhibition is here and there. Some paths are beautiful, some places are lost and some people are disconnected. The beauty that can be captured in the fray is apparent in this brief exploration of the new and the forgotten.
