“OUTER BEAUTY”
Steve Levinson
Opening Reception: Friday November 9, 5-9PM
"Outer Beauty"
Photographs by Steve Levinson
"Levinson has used his camera as cameras often want to be used: as creators of dreamscapes, as traps for fugitive weathers and atmospheres we can hardly see, but only sense."
Hello! I have been finding that, in my opinion, much of contemporary photography, despite brilliance in composition or technique, presents an air of posed artificiality and pretentiousness, as if the artist is trying too hard to be taken seriously.
I have always taken a different approach. My images are candid. I capture moments spontaneously, as they occur, with little or no prior planning. The result is that my images rarely develop within a specific theme; any thematic element is provided by the technique of shooting itself. Many viewers have called my images honest or sincere, and I consider this a tremendous compliment.
With the exception of some color enhancement or correction, the images in Outer Beauty have been produced without major digital manipulation, special effects, double exposures, sandwiching, or the use of special filters. My images show events that come to light right in front of us every day. Many are printed on water color paper, and create a highly atmospheric mood.
I would be privileged if you would take the time to visit my Exhibit at Arta, and I hope that at least some of my images will provide you with a feeling of pleasure, interest, curiosity, or wonder.
Thanks so much
Steve Levinson

ART ARRAY
Eleanor Brownridge, Lenore Burton, Bryan Davies, Louis Davies, Janie Grice, Ellie Lagrandeur, Miro Omes, Dar West
Opening Reception: Thursday October 4, 5:30 - 9:30PM
Art Array is a collective of eight fine artists originating on the southern shore of Georgian Bay. From the wealth of talent in the region, the group emerged as a singularly top-quality entity. They launched their first group show at The Arts Centre in Collingwood, Ontario in 2010 to excellent reviews. By request of the Arts Centre, Art Array created an entirely new show for the month of August 2011. Success followed quickly with an invitation to show at Art Square in Toronto. The group comprises glass artist Eleanor Brownridge; painters Miro Omes, Ellie Lagrandeur, Louis Davies, Janie Grice and Dar West; and photographic artists Lenore Burton and Bryan Davies. Each artist is steeped in a unique genre, giving Art Array a wide appeal among art lovers. Today, Art Array’s base has expanded to Toronto, Oakville and Sudbury, and even to the U.S., where an ambitious exhibition is planned for 2013. Art Array at Arta Gallery Arta Gallery presents the eight artists of Art Array in a group show the first two weeks of October. Paintings, photographic images and glass works comprise the enchanting display. One will see echoes of the group’s Georgian Bay origins, but beyond that, the group’s influences include world travels, First Nations culture, and expressionistic modalities.

Takin Aghdashloo - Tehran Dance (2012)
"Tehran Dance" is a 1991 found video footage of a wedding party in Tehran, Iran. Juxtaposing the modern and the traditional, the sexually segregated religious guests are entertained by a group of young Iranian break-dancers. The video depicts an image of the divided social values in the post-revolution, post Iran-Iraq war Iranian society.
Anahita Azrahimi - Dancing in my bedroom
A grieving mother whose whole being gets stuck in a room of treasured belongings of her dead son. Her soul lingers and dances around the memories as long as she will remember.
Dancing in my Bedroom is choreographed and performed by Olga Barrios based on a poem, in the bedroom, by Charles Smith.
Haleh Jamali and Monica De Ioanni - Table
The piece consists of Haleh and Monica seated casually at a table chatting together. The video is silent and the content of their chat a mystery. However, there are subtitles in each version of this video, written by two different writers, Mary Paulson-Ellis and Jaimie Macdonald. The writers were invited to investigate and develop their own unique version of their conversation based on symbolic clues in the video.
Semco Salehi - Pahlavan va Hamsarash
"Pahlevan and his wife" is a vivid representation of the experience of many immigrants, who live an insular existence by only following the culture and traditions they left behind. Despite living in a new country, they choose not to embrace its culture and customs. These immigrants generally transmute into individualistic.
antisocial entities who live inside their small diaspora, and, indeed invent a virtual intimacy in order to conceal the communication obstacles.
Tatiana Jennings - "And when I look in his eyes, it is not his eyes that I see"
Video installation/performance "And when I look in his eyes, it is not his eyes that I see" plays with side effects of image taking : objectification, disassociation and the transition from private to public, from alive to inanimate. The work is inspired by Man Ray's film The Starfish and the work of Marcel Duchamp. True to Dadaist form this work doesn't attempt to make any sense at all.
Visual artist include: Madison Leeson, Heather Elizabeth Hughes, Arturo Herrera, Jonny Silver

Opening Reception: Thursday August 23, 6-9pm
I highly value the art of poetry and in particular Persian poetry has a delicacy to it which has always given me visionary illustrations. Creating this collection took more than three years and each of my artwork is a symbol of poetry interpretation.
When creating my artwork, I have found my motivation from the classical and modern poets of Iran such as Hafiz, Saadi, Nima Youshij, Ahmad Shamloo, Forogh Farrokhzad, Akhavan Sales, Sohrab Sepehri and alike.
I intended to demonstrate the invisible meaning of Persian Poetry which is to say connecting beyond words. Whether or not I have accomplished it, I’m not sure. Perhaps I’m still pursuing my goal and maybe one day I will make my dream of visualizing the poetry into reality using a fresh perspective and techniques.

"Over the last couple of years I have been making "daylight' portraits of my neighbours and people who pass through my life - in the courtyard of my house that is on the outskirts of San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico.
My subjects were almost kind and generous, allowing me to fit them into my visions of who they I thought they were and the mystery that is Mexico - a mysteriousness that to me seems to seep from the country, it's past and the very pores of it's people."

It’s the first and only even prime number. The strands that compose human DNA. It represents pluralism, dualism, hands, feet, ears, eyes, lungs. Giving and taking, up and down, Good and Evil, Yin and Yang. Black and white. It’s the loneliest number since the number one. It’s the minimum GPA required to graduate and be included in the culminating gallery of the last diploma recipients from Sheridan College’s renowned Applied Photography program. Its two years.
